The Unseen Fuel: A Tale of Natural Hydrogen's Emergence

From the far-off lands of Mali, under a mango tree's generous shade, a tale unfolds that could redraw our energy future. A 'cursed' borehole, feared for its fiery bursts in 1987, was revealed as a window into an untapped energy potential - natural hydrogen.

Fast forward to 2007, when Aliou Diallo, a Malian oil tycoon, turned this 'curse' into a blessing. His discovery of the 98% hydrogen wind from the borehole challenged existing scientific beliefs and shed light (quite literally) on the rural community of Bourakébougou, powering homes and transforming lives.

What started as a local anomaly substantiated the theories of a niche scientific community, hinting at the possibility of vast, deep-earth reserves of natural hydrogen. These reserves, speculated to result from high-temperature reactions between water and iron-rich minerals, could potentially satiate the global demand for millennia to come (See Figure below).

Hydrogen has already captivated the world's attention as a clean, carbon-free fuel. Yet, our understanding of its natural formation, migration, and accumulation is just the tip of the iceberg. Pioneering risk-takers like Diallo are steering the exploration while 'Big Oil' watches from the sidelines.

Natural hydrogen does present challenges: its low energy density (at ambient temperature) and high liquefaction cost, to name a few. However, its potential in sectors struggling to decarbonize, such as heavy-duty vehicles and high-temperature industries, is immense.

While the industry today relies on 'gray' and 'blue' hydrogen, laden with emissions and costs, the future belongs to 'green' hydrogen powered by renewable energy. But there's a new player in the game - 'gold' hydrogen, naturally occurring, renewable, and potentially game-changing.

For too long, we overlooked hydrogen as we delved into oil-rich sedimentary rocks. As it turns out, we weren't looking in the right places. Now, companies worldwide, from South Australia to Spain and the US Midwest, are tuning in to the silent whispers of natural hydrogen, ready to tap into its unseen potential.

As the story of natural hydrogen unfolds, we find ourselves at the brink of an era where the 'curse' of Bourakébougou could become a global blessing. Our quest to unravel the mysteries of this elusive fuel continues as we chase the promise of a sustainable, carbon-free future.
