Summarizing a research article demands careful attention. But I’ll break this process into simple steps to help you learn this process easily.

 

Step 1 - Understand the Research Article

Start the process by reading the research article from start to end without making notes. You can skim and scan the whole article. This step provides you with a general idea of the research purpose, method, results, and conclusions. But, avoid the temptation to highlight or summarize at this stage. Instead, you should focus on learning the flow of the study and the main idea behind it. 

If your intended article is very technical, a quick second read can help increase your understanding. This develops your base before moving to the next step. 

 

Step 2 - Break Down the Structure

Most of the research articles follow a standard structure that has: 

Abstract: A quick overview of the study

Introduction: Background and research question

Methods: How the research was conducted

Results: The findings of the study

Discussion/Conclusion: explanation of results

For a better understanding, break the article into sections as mentioned above. These make it easy to extract the most relevant points.
